DNV CLEAN / CLEAN DESIGN Notation
DNV's class notation for voluntary environmental performance beyond MARPOL. CLEAN covers operational emissions + discharge control; CLEAN DESIGN adds design provisions (double-bottom, ballast treatment, bilge / sludge, bio-degradable lube oils). CLEAN requires all four operational items. CLEAN DESIGN requires CLEAN plus all four design items. Partial scores are indicative only; DNV surveyor sign-off is required for the actual notation, and specific ship types have additional requirements (e.g. tankers: inert gas system; passenger ships: grey-water treatment).
