Definition

IMO Assembly resolution adopting the 2007 Guidelines on Places of Refuge for Ships in Need of Assistance.

IMO Assembly resolution A.1001(25) sets the criteria for the provision of mobile-satellite communication systems in the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). The Assembly adopted it on 29 November 2007 at its 25th session. It defines the performance and availability requirements a satellite provider must meet for recognition in the GMDSS, including an end-to-end network availability target of 99.9 percent, with the Maritime Safety Committee determining recognition. Under it the MSC has recognized Inmarsat and Iridium. Note: A.1001(25) is the GMDSS satellite-criteria resolution; the Places of Refuge guidelines are A.949(23) of 2003, revised by A.1184(33) of 2023.
