Acquittal

C3. Logistics, freight forwarding and multimodal trade

Definition

Discharge of a transit document such as TIR carnet.

Acquittal is the discharge of a customs transit document once the goods reach the office of destination intact and within the prescribed time limit, releasing the holder and guarantor from liability for the suspended duties and taxes. Under the TIR Convention the carnet is acquitted when the office of departure receives confirmation from the office of destination that the operation terminated correctly; an unacquitted carnet leaves the guaranteeing association exposed to a claim. The same discharge concept applies to ATA carnets and to EU T1 and T2 transit under the New Computerised Transit System. Non-acquittal triggers a recovery action against the principal.
