AIS Search and Rescue Transmitter for survival craft.
An AIS Search and Rescue Transmitter that, once activated on a survival craft, broadcasts its GNSS position as AIS messages so nearby vessels and aircraft see the casualty on their AIS display and ECDIS. Performance standards are set by IMO MSC.246(83), adopted October 2007, with the device transmitting a burst of eight position reports and using MMSI in the 970 series. From 1 January 2010 an AIS-SART became an accepted alternative to the radar SART under SOLAS Chapter III for the carriage requirement on survival craft.
