ATA Carnet

C3. Logistics, freight forwarding and multimodal trade

Definition

Customs document for temporary admission.

An ATA Carnet is an international customs document that allows duty-free and tax-free temporary admission of goods, such as commercial samples, professional equipment, and exhibition material, into participating countries for up to one year. Issued under the Istanbul Convention and the earlier ATA Convention and backed by a national guaranteeing chain coordinated by the ICC World Chambers Federation, it replaces the multiple national import documents that would otherwise be needed and avoids posting duty deposits at each border.
