Ludolf Bakhuizen (Backhuysen), Dutch Golden Age marine painter, 1630 to 1708, born in Emden and active in Amsterdam. After Willem van de Velde the Younger left for England in 1672, he became the leading marine painter in the Dutch Republic, known for dramatic storm and shipping scenes. A representative work is ‘Ships in Distress off a Rocky Coast’ (around 1667, National Gallery of Art, Washington). He also painted ‘The Eendracht and a Fleet of Dutch Men-of-War’.
