Bunker fuel quality testing

C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical management

Definition

ISO 8217 fuel analysis by laboratories.

Laboratory analysis of a representative bunker sample against the ordered ISO 8217 grade, run at delivery to confirm the fuel meets specification on viscosity, density, sulphur, water, ash, and cat fines before it is consumed. Operators draw a sealed sample at the manifold and send it to an independent lab; until the result returns, prudent practice is to keep the new fuel segregated. A failing test supports a fuel-quality claim and protects machinery from off-spec damage.
