Burra Charter

F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and Museums

Definition

ICOMOS Australia heritage conservation charter relevant to ships.

The Burra Charter is the conservation doctrine adopted by Australia ICOMOS in 1979 at Burra, South Australia, and revised several times since. It defines best practice for managing places of cultural significance through the concept of retaining cultural value with the least intervention, and its sequence of understand, then conserve, then manage. Though written for built and landscape heritage, its principles are applied to historic ships, maritime sites, and wrecks, complementing the international standards of the 2001 UNESCO Convention.
