International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004, in force 2017.

The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004, addresses the transfer of invasive aquatic species in ballast water. It entered into force on 8 September 2017 and requires ships to meet the D-1 ballast water exchange standard and progressively the D-2 performance standard, using type-approved treatment systems approved under the BWMS Code. Ships carry a Ballast Water Management Plan and Record Book.
