Cargo Ship Safety Radio Certificate

A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codes

Definition

Issued under SOLAS I/12, form R.

The Cargo Ship Safety Radio Certificate confirms that a cargo ship’s radiocommunication installation meets the GMDSS requirements of SOLAS Chapter IV, issued under SOLAS I/12 on Form R after radio survey under regulation I/9. It applies to cargo ships of 300 GT and upward on international voyages, a lower threshold than the construction and equipment certificates because radio carriage under Chapter IV reaches smaller ships. A Record of Equipment (Form R) lists the GMDSS outfit by sea area A1 to A4. Validity runs up to five years under the Harmonized System of Survey and Certification, with annual radio surveys.
