Centrifugal purifier
B2. Marine EngineeringDefinition
Self-cleaning separator for fuel and lube oil (Alfa Laval, GEA).
A centrifugal purifier separates water and solids from fuel or lube oil by spinning the oil at several thousand g in a disc stack, where the denser water and sludge migrate outward and the cleaned oil passes inward, with self-cleaning bowls discharging accumulated sludge on a timer. Correct gravity-disc selection (or modern back-pressure control) sets the oil-water interface. It is essential conditioning before residual fuel reaches the injection system and for keeping lube oil within spec.
