Chapter VII (SOLAS)

A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codes

Definition

Carriage of dangerous goods.

SOLAS Chapter VII, Carriage of Dangerous Goods, makes the supporting IMO dangerous-goods codes mandatory under treaty law. Part A applies the IMDG Code to packaged dangerous goods (regulation VII/3), part A-1 covers solid dangerous goods in bulk through the IMSBC Code, part B applies the IBC Code to chemicals carried in bulk, and part C applies the IGC Code to liquefied gases in bulk. It requires a dangerous-goods manifest or stowage plan under regulation VII/4 and document of compliance for ships carrying these cargoes. The chapter binds tankers, gas carriers, and general cargo ships on international voyages under SOLAS Chapter I.
