Class Notation
A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codesDefinition
Class society designation reflecting compliance with construction and equipment rules incorporated into SOLAS by reference.
A class notation is a coded designation a classification society assigns to record the specific construction, equipment, and service standards a ship meets under that society’s rules. SOLAS does not issue class notations, but it relies on them: SOLAS I/6 lets a flag State delegate statutory survey and certification to a recognized organization, almost always a classification society, whose rules implement SOLAS structural and machinery requirements. Notations such as ice class, redundant propulsion, or enhanced fire protection record compliance beyond the SOLAS floor. The RO Code (resolution MSC.349(92)) governs the delegation, in force from 1 January 2015.
