Container indices
C1. Commercial shipping, chartering, economics and financeDefinition
Assessments such as SCFI, CCFI, WCI, FBX, Xeneta XSI.
Container indices are published assessments of container freight rates used to track the box market and to settle container derivatives. The main ones are the SCFI (Shanghai export spot, 15 lanes, weekly), the CCFI (all major Chinese ports, spot plus contract), the Drewry WCI (World Container Index, eight major lanes, dollars per FEU), the FBX (Freightos Baltic Index, spot, dollars per FEU), and the Xeneta XSI (crowd-sourced long-term contract rates). Each differs in scope, spot-versus-contract mix, and unit (per TEU or per FEU). The FBX and SCFI underlie cleared container FFAs, so the choice of index drives basis risk for a box hedge.
