Container yard

C3. Logistics, freight forwarding and multimodal trade

Definition

CY, in-port container storage area.

A container yard (CY) is the in-terminal area where full and empty containers are stacked between sea and land legs. Yard blocks are worked by rubber-tyred gantries, rail-mounted gantries, reach stackers, or straddle carriers, and planned by the terminal operating system to minimize rehandles. Under CY/CY service the carrier’s responsibility runs yard to yard. Yard density, expressed in TEU per hectare, and dwell time are the key levers on a terminal’s effective capacity.
