Deck machinery
B2. Marine EngineeringDefinition
Anchor windlass, mooring winches, and cranes.
Deck machinery is the powered equipment on the weather deck for anchoring, mooring, and cargo handling: the anchor windlass, mooring winches, capstans, and deck cranes or derricks. Drive is electric or hydraulic. The windlass heaves the anchor cable and is sized to the equipment number that sets anchor and chain dimensions under class rules. Mooring winches render line at controlled tension, and many use split drums to separate the working turns from the stowage turns. Brake holding capacity, design loads, and guards follow classification and the OCIMF mooring guidelines for tankers.
