EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index)

D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuels

Definition

Mandatory IMO design efficiency metric for new ships.

The Energy Efficiency Design Index is the mandatory IMO metric, in force since 2013 under MARPOL Annex VI Chapter 4, that sets a maximum grams of CO2 per tonne-mile for new ships by type and size. The attained EEDI from sea-trial power and a reference speed must fall below a required value that tightens in phases against a baseline reference line. It pushes hull, engine, and propulsion efficiency at the design stage, and is the new-build counterpart to the EEXI applied to existing ships.
