Fixed firefighting system
C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical managementDefinition
Such as CO2, foam, or water mist installations.
A fixed firefighting system is a permanently installed extinguishing system protecting machinery spaces, cargo holds, or accommodation, as required by SOLAS Chapter II-2 and detailed in the FSS Code. Common types are total-flooding CO2, high-expansion or low-expansion foam, water mist, and pressurized water-spray systems. Machinery spaces of category A carry a fixed gas, foam, or water-based system with alarms that sound before release and a means to evacuate. Crew confirm boundary closure, ventilation shutdown, and personnel evacuation before discharge. The system is surveyed annually, with periodic checks of cylinder pressures and quantities, and is shown on the fire control plan posted at access points.
