Garbage chute (weight item)

B1. Naval Architecture

Definition

Outfitting item entered in weight estimate.

A garbage chute is a vertical trunk that lets crew drop sorted waste from accommodation or galley level down to a collection point, and it appears as one line in the ship’s weight estimate under the outfit group. Its inclusion reflects how a detailed weight estimate is built: every fitted item, from the chute and its doors to the garbage-room compactor and bins, is logged with a mass and a center of gravity so the lightship weight and its centers are accurate. The garbage handling arrangement is governed by MARPOL Annex V and the ship’s Garbage Management Plan. As a weight item the chute is minor in mass but real in the rollup, which sums hundreds of such entries.
