GHG Intensity
X69. EGCS Scrubbers, SCR and Marine Air EmissionsDefinition
Well-to-wake greenhouse gas emission intensity used in FuelEU Maritime accounting.
GHG intensity is the well-to-wake greenhouse gas emission per unit of energy, grams of CO2-equivalent per megajoule, the core compliance variable of FuelEU Maritime. The regulation caps the annual fleet-average intensity of energy used onboard, starting at a 2 percent cut from the 2020 baseline of 91.16 gCO2e/MJ (a 2025 limit of 89.34) and tightening to 80 percent by 2050. CO2-equivalent here folds in CH4 and N2O at AR5 GWP100 values, which penalizes LNG for methane slip. The same intensity concept drives the proposed IMO GFI metric.
