Gross terms
C1. Commercial shipping, chartering, economics and financeDefinition
Voyage charter on which owner bears loading and discharging costs.
A voyage charter on which the owner bears the cost of loading and discharging the cargo, as part of the freight, the opposite of free-in-and-out terms. Under gross terms (often the printed default of liner-style dry forms) the owner organizes and pays stevedoring at both ends, so the freight rate has to absorb those costs. The split between owner and charterer cargo-handling cost is set by terms such as FIO, FIOST, FILO, and liner terms.
