Gulf of Oman

E1. Maritime security, geopolitics and risk

Definition

Strategic approach to the Strait of Hormuz.

The Gulf of Oman is the body of water between Oman, Iran, and Pakistan that forms the southern approach to the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf. It carries most Gulf crude bound for Asia and Europe, so it sits at the choke of about 20% of global oil supply moving through Hormuz. The Gulf of Oman has seen tanker attacks and seizures, including limpet-mine strikes on six tankers in May and June 2019 attributed by the US to Iran; such incidents drive war-risk additional premium and naval escort requests in the area.
