Handysize
C1. Commercial shipping, chartering, economics and financeDefinition
Dry bulk segment of about 10,000 to 40,000 dwt.
The smallest mainstream dry-bulk segment, roughly 10,000 to 40,000 dwt, geared and flexible enough to call at small ports and carry minor bulks, grains, and bagged cargoes the larger classes cannot reach. Handysizes trade on a dispersed route network and form the Baltic Handysize Index. Their shallow draft and self-discharging gear keep them employed at berths that bigger ships are excluded from.
