Hetjens Marine Pottery
F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and MuseumsDefinition
Dutch and German maritime ceramic collections.
Maritime-themed ceramics associated with the Hetjens Museum (Deutsches Keramikmuseum) in Dusseldorf, Germany, founded in 1909 from the bequest of Laurenz Heinrich Hetjens. The museum holds about 8,000 years of ceramic history across more than 20,000 objects, including Delftware and faience with ship, harbor, and sea motifs. Dutch and German tin-glazed earthenware of the 17th and 18th centuries often carried marine scenes; the museum documents this tradition.
