F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and SportDefinition
US sailmaker founded 1952.
Hood Sails is a US sailmaker founded in 1952 by Frederick “Ted” Hood (1927 to 2013) in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Hood was the first sailmaker to weave his own Dacron sailcloth, and built machinery to make the cloth he cut sails from; his sails powered every America’s Cup winner from 1958 to 1977. A naval architect as well, Hood designed the 1974 Cup defender Courageous. The loft grew into a worldwide service network and was acquired by Quantum Sails in 2017.
