A3. Marine environmental legislation: MARPOL and its annexesDefinition
International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate under MARPOL Annex VI.
The International Air Pollution Prevention (IAPP) certificate is the ship-level certificate showing compliance with MARPOL Annex VI, required for ships of 400 GT and above on international voyages under Regulation 6. Its supplement records the engines’ NOx tier and EIAPP status, the SOx compliance method (fuel or equivalent scrubber), any incinerator and VOC arrangements, and ODS records. It is issued for up to five years after an initial survey and is endorsed at periodic and intermediate surveys. The IAPP is the air-pollution counterpart to the IOPP (Annex I) and is inspected by port State control under the Paris and Tokyo MOUs.
