Ice-class tanker (Arc7)

B5. Ship Types and Individual Vessels

Definition

Arctic LNG/oil tanker (e.g., Christophe de Margerie).

An Arc7 ice-class tanker is built to the Russian Maritime Register Arc7 polar notation, the highest class for independent year-round operation in thick first-year Arctic ice, able to break level ice around 2.1 meters thick. The lead ship for the type, the Christophe de Margerie, is an Arc7 LNG carrier built by Daewoo (DSME) in 2016 for the Yamal LNG project, about 299 meters long with a summer deadweight near 96,800 tonnes and 172,600 cubic meters of LNG capacity. Arc7 hulls use double-acting designs that run bow-first in open water and stern-first through heavy ice, with Azipod propulsion, so they reach Sabetta on the Northern Sea Route without an icebreaker escort.
