IHM Part I/II/III
B4. Shipbuilding, Materials, Sea Trials, Retrofits and RecyclingDefinition
Inventory of Hazardous Materials sections.
The Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) is divided into three parts that track hazardous materials across a ship’s life under the Hong Kong Convention and EU Ship Recycling Regulation 1257/2013. Part I lists materials in the ship’s structure and equipment (asbestos, PCBs, ozone-depleting substances, certain heavy metals, organotin antifoulings), maintained throughout service. Part II lists operationally generated wastes, and Part III lists stores, both compiled before recycling. Part I is mandatory at new construction and for existing ships, verified by survey, and carried with the International Certificate on Inventory of Hazardous Materials. The recycling facility uses the completed inventory to plan safe removal. Parts II and III are added at end of life.
