A1. The IMO and the international regulatory framework

Definition

IMO Instruments Implementation Code, mandatory under SOLAS, MARPOL, Load Lines, Tonnage 1969, COLREG, and STCW.

The IMO Instruments Implementation Code sets out the obligations of states as flag, port, and coastal states and serves as the audit standard for IMSAS. Adopted by resolution A.1070(28), it became mandatory on 1 January 2016 through amendments to SOLAS, MARPOL Annexes I and II, Load Lines, Tonnage 1969, COLREG, and STCW. It distinguishes mandatory provisions (shall) from recommendatory ones (should).
