Definition

International Labour Organization, UN agency that adopted MLC 2006 and earlier maritime labor conventions.

The International Labour Organization is the UN specialized agency for labor standards, founded in 1919 and based in Geneva. It adopted the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, which consolidated more than 60 earlier maritime labor instruments, and works with the IMO on seafarer matters such as fair treatment, abandonment, and the human element. Its tripartite structure gives governments, employers, and workers a vote.
