IMO Type II chemical tanker

B5. Ship Types and Individual Vessels

Definition

Most common chemical tanker type.

An IMO Type 2 chemical tanker is built to the middle of the three pollution-and-hazard categories of the IBC Code, intended for products requiring significant preventive measures to preclude escape. The ship type determines the degree of cargo-tank protection by location inside the hull: a Type 1 ship gives the greatest protection for the most hazardous cargoes, a Type 2 ship gives intermediate protection, and a Type 3 ship the least. Most parcel chemical tankers are built to Type 2 standard because it covers the widest range of commonly traded cargoes.
