Intermediate Survey

B4. Shipbuilding, Materials, Sea Trials, Retrofits and Recycling

Definition

Class survey between Special Surveys.

The intermediate survey is a class periodical survey carried out at or between the second and third annual surveys, roughly halfway through the five-year class cycle. It is more extensive than an annual survey but lighter than the special (class renewal) survey, and on tankers and bulk carriers over a certain age it adds ballast-tank examinations, thickness measurements, and overall and close-up surveys under the Enhanced Survey Programme (ESP Code). Its purpose is to confirm the hull, machinery, and equipment remain in class condition between the two special surveys. A failed or postponed intermediate survey can suspend class and invalidate statutory certificates.
