International Safety Management Code
C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical managementDefinition
ISM Code.
The ISM Code, made mandatory through SOLAS Chapter IX, requires every company operating ships above set thresholds to run a documented Safety Management System covering safety policy, defined responsibilities, master’s authority, a Designated Person Ashore, emergency preparedness, near-miss and non-conformity reporting, and internal audit. Compliance is certified by a Document of Compliance for the company and a Safety Management Certificate for each ship, both audited by the flag state or its recognized organization.
