INTERTANKO/INTERCARGO
A7. Compliance, certification and enforcementDefinition
Owner associations advocating compliance standards.
INTERTANKO and INTERCARGO are owner associations for the independent tanker and dry-bulk sectors. INTERTANKO, the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners, represents independent crude, product, and chemical tanker owners; INTERCARGO, the International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners, represents bulk carrier owners. Both develop sector positions at the IMO, publish operational and safety guidance, and press members toward higher compliance standards. INTERCARGO publishes an annual bulk carrier casualty report tracking losses, often linked to cargo liquefaction. Neither body has regulatory power; they are advocacy and best-practice associations that work alongside ICS and the cargo-side bodies OCIMF and RightShip.
