L-band satellite broadband service (GMDSS-recognized 2020).
Iridium Certus is the broadband service on Iridium’s 66-satellite L-band low-earth-orbit constellation, giving pole-to-pole coverage that GEO systems cannot reach above roughly 70 degrees latitude. Certus tiers range from low-rate IoT links up to about 704 kbps over compact terminals. IMO recognized Iridium as a GMDSS mobile-satellite service provider, with GMDSS distress and safety service beginning operation in 2020 alongside the Iridium SafetyCast MSI service. Certus suits polar and high-latitude operations where Inmarsat GEO coverage drops off.
