J/105

F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and Sport

Definition

One-design asymmetric-kite keelboat designed by Rod Johnstone.

A 34.5 ft (10.5 m) one-design keelboat designed by Rod Johnstone for J/Boats and launched in 1991. The J/105 was the first production yacht built around a retractable carbon bowsprit flying an asymmetric spinnaker, a layout that reshaped club racing by removing the symmetric-kite pole and crew. It carries a fixed fin keel and is crewed by five to seven. Strong one-design fleets run in North America and Europe; it is a recognized class but was never an Olympic boat.
