Joint MSC/MEPC Working Group
A1. The IMO and the international regulatory frameworkDefinition
Cross-committee group on matters such as the human element or autonomous ships.
A Joint MSC/MEPC Working Group is convened when an item spans both safety and environmental mandates, so the Maritime Safety Committee and the Marine Environment Protection Committee address it together rather than in parallel. The standing example is the Joint Working Group on the Human Element, and joint work has also covered the regulatory scoping exercise for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) and the development of the MASS Code. The group reports to both committees, which retain the power to adopt any resulting amendment. It exists only for the duration of its assigned task.
