F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and InstitutionsDefinition
Japanese port-city maritime community.
The maritime concentration at Kobe, Japan, a major port in the Hanshin region with a heavy shipbuilding and marine-engineering base (Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries both operate Kobe yards). It groups ship management, marine equipment makers, and MET through Kobe University’s Graduate School of Maritime Sciences. Kobe rebuilt its port after the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake and remains a center for Japanese shipbuilding, marine machinery, and cruise operations alongside neighboring Osaka.
