LFL (low flash fuel)
B2. Marine EngineeringDefinition
Fuels with flash point < 60 °C addressed by IGF Code.
Low-flashpoint fuels are those with a flash point below 60 C, the threshold below which the SOLAS general prohibition on such fuels applies and the IGF Code’s safety regime takes over. The code, in force since 1 January 2017 for ships of 500 GT and above, sets a risk-based design for fuel containment, bunkering, gas-safe machinery spaces, and double-walled piping. It covers LNG and, through approval in principle and forthcoming amendments, methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen.
