Lifeboat drill

C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical management

Definition

SOLAS Chapter III drill at intervals not exceeding one month.

A SOLAS Chapter III drill in which the crew musters, prepares and lowers a lifeboat, and where practicable maneuvers it in the water, held at intervals not exceeding one month so that each crew member takes part at least monthly and lifeboats are launched at least every three months. The drill tests the launching gear, the release hooks, and the crew’s competence under the muster list. Lifeboat-launch accidents during drills drove the on-load release-hook reforms in the SOLAS amendments.
