Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City

F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and Museums

Definition

Formerly inscribed UNESCO World Heritage Site, delisted in 2021.

Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 for its docks, warehouses, and commercial buildings documenting the city’s role as a leading port of the British Empire and the Atlantic trade. UNESCO removed it from the list in 2021, judging that new waterfront development, including a planned stadium, had eroded the value for which it was listed. It became only the third site ever delisted, a notable case in the debate over heritage management against urban development.
