Load test (cargo gear)

B4. Shipbuilding, Materials, Sea Trials, Retrofits and Recycling

Definition

Cargo gear proof load.

A cargo-gear load test is the proof-load lift that confirms a ship’s lifting appliance and its loose gear can safely carry their rated load before the safe working load is certified. Under ILO Convention 152 it applies to cranes, derricks, and the chains, hooks, shackles, and blocks that make up the gear, each proof-loaded above its SWL on the convention’s graduated scale, then thoroughly examined. The lift is held and the gear checked for permanent set, slip, and brake holding. Results and the assigned SWL go in the Register of Lifting Appliances and Loose Gear with the corresponding certificate. The test repeats every five years and after substantial repair or alteration.
