Logger (forest products carrier)

B5. Ship Types and Individual Vessels

Definition

Open-hatch GP carrier.

A logger is an open-hatch general-purpose carrier built to load logs and packaged forest products through full-width hatches that open the whole hold. The straight-sided box holds take pre-slung timber and logs without the obstruction of wing tanks, and many loggers carry a heavy timber deck cargo lashed above the weather deck, secured under load-line timber-freeboard rules. Deck cranes or gantry cranes handle the units at ports without shore gear. The trade moves logs and lumber from supply regions such as the US Pacific Northwest, New Zealand, and Russia to Asian mills. The open-hatch box hold also suits paper reels, steel, and project cargo on return legs.
