Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006
E1. Maritime security, geopolitics and riskDefinition
ILO instrument, security-relevant for crew welfare in K&R cases.
The ILO Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (in force 20 August 2013), the consolidated seafarers’ rights instrument covering employment terms, wages, hours, accommodation, repatriation, and medical care, certified through the Maritime Labour Certificate and the Declaration of Maritime Labour Compliance. Its security relevance lies in captivity and detention: the 2018 amendments (in force 26 December 2020) keep the seafarer employment agreement and wages running while a seafarer is held captive after piracy or armed robbery, until release or repatriation.
