Mulberry Harbour

The Mulberry harbours were the two prefabricated artificial ports towed across the Channel and assembled off the Normandy beaches after the D-Day landings of 6 June 1944 to land troops, vehicles, and supplies before a fixed port could be captured. Built from concrete caisson breakwaters, floating roadways, and blockships, Mulberry B at Arromanches handled thousands of tons a day for months, while a storm wrecked Mulberry A at Omaha in late June. The harbours were a feat of military maritime engineering that sustained the Allied advance.
