Multimodal transport

C3. Logistics, freight forwarding and multimodal trade

Definition

Transport using two or more modes under one contract.

Multimodal transport is the carriage of goods by at least two different modes under a single contract issued by one multimodal transport operator, who takes responsibility for the whole journey even though sub-carriers perform individual legs. The FIATA Bill of Lading (FBL) and ICC/UNCTAD Rules for Multimodal Transport (1992) are the dominant documentary frameworks; the 1980 UN Multimodal Convention never entered force, so liability rests on contract terms and the unimodal conventions applicable to each leg.
