Multipurpose terminal
C4. Ports, terminals and coastal/marine civil engineeringDefinition
Terminal for mixed cargo types.
A multipurpose terminal handles mixed cargo types, general and break-bulk, containers, project cargo, and sometimes dry bulk, at the same berths using flexible equipment rather than dedicated specialist gear. Mobile harbor cranes, ample open and covered storage, and a strong quay apron let one berth switch between a container call, a steel parcel, and a heavy-lift shipment. The flexibility suits ports with variable or modest volumes that cannot justify a dedicated container or bulk terminal. Productivity per berth is lower than a specialized terminal, so the trade is versatility against the peak throughput a single-purpose terminal achieves.
