Multipurpose vessel (MPV)

B5. Ship Types and Individual Vessels

Definition

General cargo with heavy lift capability.

A multipurpose vessel (MPV) is a geared general cargo ship designed to carry containers, breakbulk, bulk, and heavy project pieces in one box-shaped hold, the modern successor to the tweendecker. Its mark is heavy-lift gear: one or two cranes of 80 to 250 tons, sometimes paired for tandem lifts above 500 tons, plus tweendecks and high stacking strength. Sizes cluster from 7,000 to 30,000 dwt. The flexibility suits trades that containers do not fit: wind turbine blades and nacelles, transformers, yachts, rails, and plant modules to ports with weak shore cranes. Heavy-lift specialists like the F-type and P-type designs sit at the top of the class.
