The Nautical Institute, founded in London in 1972, is the international professional body for navigators and shipmasters, with members in more than 120 countries. It sets continuing professional development standards, publishes practitioner guidance on subjects from pilotage to dynamic positioning, and runs the widely used DP operator certification scheme. Membership grades from Associate Fellow to Fellow recognize sea-going and shore experience and provide a professional credential beyond the statutory Certificate of Competency.
