North Sails
F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and SportDefinition
Major sailmaker founded 1957 by Lowell North.
North Sails, founded in 1957 by the Olympic Star champion Lowell North, is the largest sailmaker in the world and the developer of 3DL and the later 3Di molded-laminate sails built as a single continuous membrane over a three-dimensional mold rather than panelled from flat cloth. That process gives a sail that holds its designed shape under load with less stretch, and it equips most of the top of the racing fleet from one-designs to the America’s Cup.
